Who can examine a thesis

Principal supervisors must ensure that:

  • all examiners have attained a degree that is at least equivalent to the candidate they are examining—or, in rare circumstances, have published work that evidently fulfils this criterion

  • all examiners have attained a track record of research or scholarship in a field that overlaps with the thesis

  • all examiners are active in research or scholarship at this time

  • at least one of the examiners should be Australian, and one may be international —unless the principal researcher can argue that only Australian/ international academics would be suitable

  • all examiners have accepted the invitation to examine and agree to return an examiner report within 4- 6 weeks of receiving the thesis.

  • none of the examiners are biased by a conflict of interest.

For example, examiners might be biased by a conflict of interest if they had

  • worked or studied at CDU during the time the thesis was completed

  • published with the supervisor or student in the last five years

  • worked with the supervisor on a project in the last 5 years

  • developed a close relationship or friendship with the candidate or supervisors

All potential conflicts of interest will be reviewed by the ADR Review Panel which meets once per month which may delay the examination. To avoid delays, supervisors are encouraged to select examiners with no potential conflicts.
